Simon says... Southridge redevelopment - STOP!

According to an article in the March 27 edition of The Business Journal of Milwaukee, Retail woes delay mall plans Developers table projects for Pabst Farms, Southridge it sounds like Simon is going to be going nowhere with redevelopment plans for Southridge. President Hermes chimes in with his wisdom in the article, but if anybody's an expert on things up in the air, I guess he's the one to ask. :roll:

Of course, things are tough all over as the Pabst Farms mall, well, it's probably more productive being a farm (which it was all along, IMHO).

Too bad about the non-development! The one thing I noticed the other day was all the paper & litter along the perimeter road on the east side. Almost looks as bad as the roads on the north side in Milwaukee. Can't they at least clean it up???

When I was at Brookfield Square the other day, the area back by the food court looked kind of trashed as well. Perhaps the malls are cutting back on the clean up crews.

Southridge always is packed on the weekends...
How are they not making money?
The few times I have been there during the week lately it has been busy also.
They need some high end stores... Clothing and Pottery Barn type.

I've been there too when it has been packed, but... nobody was carrying bags. Lots of browsing, or free family entertainment.

Or, maybe they aren't making money because they are paying their executives too much. :wink:

Yeah, just what a mall needs - more clothing. :roll:

An Apple store would be much better. :wink:

In other news, I've heard rumblings that Best Buy is looking at the USBC lot to build a bigger store.

Village President's Report: President Hermes reported that he and Manager Michaels recently participated in a monthly conference call with representatives of the Simon Properties Group. He said the discussion was positive and that Simon Properties is looking at Southridge Mall as a top priority when the current economic downturn improves. In the meantime, however, they are attempting to attract more people to their malls by offering quality events. For Southridge, this would involve an outdoor movie presentation in the parking lot in front of the former Steve & Barry's. Seating will be available along with the option to view the movie from your vehicle (similar to an outdoor theatre). President Hermes reported that mall management has proposed temporary use of the Linens-n-Things vacant space as a haunted house (in the fall). President Hermes said he informed mall management that while the Village may consider this option, this is not the type of use the community preferres to see. He said he stressed to them that the Village would want to see a very professional atmosphere and that this special use‚ would need to comply with all building and signage codes. He said they are also proposing to erect large play areas in the store before and after this event. Manager Michaels reported that various agencies and communities were contacted and no negative comments were filed against the promoters (Music on the Move, a local business) when they presented this event.

Yup, Hermes is pro-business... if it has snob appeal. :roll:

I dunno, I'd like to see a haunted house there, or an outdoor moving theater, or have it hold a monthly Rummage-O-Rama. ANYTHING to get rid of the Wally World of Wisconsin look when you are on that section of Grange and Northway.

Simon doesn't have the money to put into Southridge, or so we've been told by President Hermes at Comprehensive Planning meetings, but apparently they have money to spend elsewhere per this MJS article from December 8.

They better start putting some money into Southridge to improve it or it won't be around. Remember Northridge???

Well, the Board is meeting tonight to discuss developing the land on the south end. No shock there...anything is better than what is currently there - nothing.

All they did was agree to pass it on to the plan commission. The big meeting will be the 29th.

And who's fault is it there is nothing there? Simon's. They have the done a very poor job of marketing the Younkers portion, thus that corner is still empty. We need stores in the mall, not development outside an empty mall. I mean, is the empty former Sears/Leath furniture store is a whole lot better looking than an empty parking lot? :roll:

And considering they just spent $2.3 billion to buy 22 other properties, they certainly don't need the Village to fund a TIF district for any improvements.
