A vehicle struck a child riding a bike Wednesday morning near Northway and Broad St., authorities said. The girl was with her mother at the time.

Emergency workers could provide few details about the accident. A medical unit from Greenfield went to help first responders in Greendale about 10:25 a.m., according to the Greenfield Fire Department. Emergency responders believed the injured child is a 5-year-old.

News helicopters were seen flying over the Village shortly after the accident. Police have the area sealed off.

I agree. What makes me mad is that cars don't stop when turning right onto Broad St. Plus the driver is looking for a shop name or place to park and not for pedistrans in the crosswalk. It's amazing this doesn't happen more often.

I wonder if the driver was talking on a cell phone.

It's also turning off of Broad St. on to Northeway. When I walk the Village I avoid crossing at the intersection around Northway and Broad St. at busy times. Instead I cross at Parking St. or by Basswood. They might be up to speed, but are out of the "curve zone" and sight of parking lots.

And they want to reconfigure the ring road by Southridge to go through the new development and senior apartments? Maybe this tragedy will encourage the Village to do a serious traffic impact analysis of their plans, for a change.

What could fix this? Better law enforcement. Why is it I see cops sitting over by Old World Bakery or by World Market doing their paperwork when they could be sitting by the Visitor center or on Municipal Square? Doesn't the Village Center deserve some police service as well? A presence of a squad will slow people down, and maybe generate some revenue in tickets.

NBJOE,

I have many times seen a cop parked along side the Visitor Center late evenings.

What I don't understand now is why Chief Dams is keeping the driver's name secret, saying it will be at least a week until a decision is made about charges, and worst of all, saying he did not know about the Franklin woman's driving history. ??? Greendale Police doesn't have a computer (or phone) to find out if she's had prior accidents, speeding tickets, etc.? Hard to believe, sir.

I understand why people are angry (read the comments of jsonline) - this driver should have been charged with something by now.

The police should have more of a presence in the shops area but they don't. Bad for tourism? Too busy at Southridge? Both? Police should be stopping people from rolling through the stops signs, jaywalking, speeding down in the Village. Just like everywhere else.

*GDGrad02: late evening police presence is just protecting the stores, no one is walking, very few cars are around.

I noticed there is a fundraiser planned for Ava Zimmerman's family at Ricardo's on April 22. 15% of the sales will be donated to the fund established at Associated Bank (per the sign on Ricardo's door).

OK, it's been a week, no charges, no name of the very protected driver (who is she connected with in Greendale???), what goes on Chief Dams?! :x

I agree. If this goes on another week it'll really sound fishy. And I have to wonder why the State Patrol is doing an accident reconstruction (unless it is common practice in the event of a fatality) when this happened on a village street.
